As October comes to a close, I along with my friends at P.O.V. want to acknowledge breast cancer awareness month. According to the CDC, early detection through mammograms are key. Mammogram screening guidelines vary according to family history and physician preference. It is not something to overlook or skip. It is just as important as our annual gynecological exams. In fact, many physicians suggest making a mammogram appointment around the same time as your annual exam as it becomes a good habit and you are forced to remember both. Also, know the signs and symptoms of breast cancer and share them with the women in your life.
In honor of breast cancer, I wrote a special poem for the survivors, the patients and the families who have lost loved ones to this nasty disease.
He Watches Her
He watches her suffer from afar
She begins to drift, lose her bearings; strange, bizarre
She is hypnotized by his stare
She feels his eyes pierce her soul; realistically unaware that he is physically there
He forcefully attempts to stop
He is in too deep, fixated; self-control rot
His dark eyes feel warm and inviting
Tainted thoughts fill her mind; she wants to give in; stop fighting
He feeds off of all she has
She is weak, frail; when will he conquer me; peace alas
She slowly begins to shut her eyes
Please don't take her away; faith and hope begin to cry
Strength whispers lightly, I am quietly resting
Cancer does not know with whom he is messing
Just when she thinks she will draw her last breath
Angels appear erasing any thoughts of death
He bows his head in disbelief sharp feelings; shameful defeat
He is not as strong as one thinks; especially when victory is their feat
