Did you wear braces? Did you hate them? What if, once your braces were removed, you looked at your teeth and found them stained -- or even worse, rotten? According to USA Today, in Portland, OR, Devin Bost sued an orthodonist for rotten (straight) teeth.
Although two to three years is considered normal, 22-year-old Bost purportedly suffered awful tooth decay and periodontal disease after wearing braces from seven to 18 years old.
David Hollander, Bost's attorney says: "Some of Bost's teeth will need to be replaced with implants, but others cannot be because they have rotted to the jaw."
According to the article, the president of the American Association of Orthodontists told ABC News that it was "extremely unusual" for somebody to wear braces for 11 years, adding that he "could not think of an instance where that would be the case."
Bost is seeking $185,000: $35,000 for dental bills and $15,000 for pain and suffering.
This is my first time hearing of someone who has experienced rotting teeth after wearing braces. It is also the longest I have ever heard of someone wearing braces. Have you ever experienced, read about or heard of something like this?
At a glance, I wondered how anyone could blame an orthodontist if they were (possibly) not taking care of their teeth while wearing braces. But at the same time, in reading the article, I found that two years is the average amount of time people wear braces. So ...
Who do you think is to blame?
